#StudentExperience: Similoluwa Akinmuda

In my opinion, one of the best perks about being affiliated with Towson University is the opportunity to interact with TU students through our research internship program. Throughout the year, TU students gain real-world research experience while completing their studies; the Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI) receives valuable assistance as well as different perspectives as we meet our project needs. This summer, we’ve been lucky to have Similoluwa (Simi) Akinmuda ‘18 join us as she completes her Master’s of Science in Marketing Intelligence in TU’s College of Business and Economics.

Simi received her B.S. in Economics from Covenant University in Ogun, Nigeria. While completing her bachelor’s degree, she conducted economic research on the relationship between the use of IT and agriculture in West African countries. After graduation, she worked as an Investment Research Analyst with Afrinvest Securities, Ltd. in Lagos, Nigeria, where she honed her skills for economic research and writing, data analysis and reporting, and client collaboration. Simi’s interest in TU piqued as her sister completed her Master’s in Applied IT on campus, which led her to apply to and enroll in the marketing intelligence program.

As part of her academic program, she takes a variety of classes, ranging from marketing to project management to data analytics and coding. Simi has been active on campus as an International Student Ambassador in the International Student and Scholar Office in addition to her graduate studies and now her RESI internship. At RESI, Simi has contributed to the success of numerous projects by completing statistical analyses, primary research, secondary data collection, and report editing.

After graduation, Simi plans to work as a business intelligence analyst, drawing on the skills she has gained through her TU education to utilize database systems and data mining techniques. She would also like the opportunity to travel and learn about new cultures.

Simi has been a valuable part of the RESI team this summer, and we wish her all the best as she continues her studies as a Towson Tiger!
