Burck Smith presented the latest installment of TU Incubator’s EdTech Stories series. Ten years before launching StraighterLine, Burck co-founded SMARTHINKING (now a Pearson company), the largest online tutoring provider for schools and colleges. SMARTHINKING provided the foundation for Burck to build a new company that could solve the #1 issue facing students today — the skyrocketing cost of a college education. StraighterLine solves this issue by offering low-cost online courses that are guaranteed to transfer to schools in the network of accredited colleges.

“Getting a chance to hear Burck’s thoughts on starting not just one but TWO successful EdTech companies was a privilege. One of the things that I appreciated in particular was that he was willing to share some of the early struggles that his startups have had… and how he was able to overcome them!” — Darin Singh, Founder PrepFactory

You can see Burck’s presentation on TU Incubator’s Facebook page below.

David Robson, Co-Founder Spiral Math, said “this was an inspiring presentation. Burck reviewed his personal history, summarized his first startup, then focused on the challenges of starting and growing StraighterLine. The list of obstacles indicated that it was certainly impossible…but he’s done it.

EdTech Stories is an ongoing series presented by TU Incubator. The next story will be David Yaskin from Faculty Guild on November 16, 2017.
