Zach is a junior studying communication studies and political science at Towson University, where he also works as a marketing assistant in the Office of Partnerships & Outreach. Zach assists the team with creating social media posts, collecting data on various programs and initiatives, assisting with email marketing and event planning, implementing social media directives, and attending various events. “This position has enhanced my communication skills. That may seem unexpected being that I am a communication studies major, but working in this office has allowed me to have ability to write more email communications and have even more face-to-face time with coworkers than I’ve had in previous jobs. I also feel that creating social media posts has helped me to become a more effective and concise writer,” said Zach.

The Office of Partnerships & Outreach provides communications and support to a number of offices and initiatives, including the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), a national affiliate organization that connects leaders from colleges and universities located in urban areas. “While I’ve enjoyed all of the projects so far, I have really enjoyed researching data on the colleges and universities that are a part of CUMU, as well as working on posts for various articles published in Metropolitan Universities journal. I have especially enjoyed collecting data on which universities are MSIs (minority-serving institutions) and to see the diversity and programs at work in these universities striving for equity and inclusion for all students,” said Zach.

Zach’s advice for other students looking to gain real-world experience during college? “My advice would be try to have as many experiences as you can find. Whether an internship or paid work, try to do as many as you can in different areas. Strive to have an array of skills that will set you apart from others, especially work to have effective communication skills. Don’t take any project or experience for granted, there is always something that can be learned and applied in the field.”

After graduating, Zach plans to attend American University to obtain a master’s degree in intercultural and international communications. Eventually, Zach would like to work with NGOs, charities, or some other type of service-based organization, especially on a global scale. He is also considering joining the Peace Corps.
